We left Deadpool and Valentine at the zoo fighting their way through Harrower’s chimera monsters. Thankfully Renesmee, Deadpool’s symbiote baby, is prepared to help protect her little ad-hoc family. Not thankfully, Harrower gets wise as to why the symbiote is working with Deadpool instead of eating him from the inside out as designed. She disconnects the backpack full of the sedative cocktail Valentine generated with their mutant gift, thus the upsetting potential of Renesmee is unleashed. This turn of events leads to Deadpool’s capture and the shattering of one of Valentine’s arms.
Valentine continues to be a great addition to the Marvel Universe and every new thing learned about them is a welcome aspect of any issue. This month, we learn they are a mutant and X-Force has been keeping an eye on them as revealed by a data page penned by Sage.
A notable high point of the issue is the reveal that Valentine has stolen one of Deadpool’s guns. This beautiful marriage of funny and narratively satisfying is peak Deadpool. The ebb and flow of the action ia punctuated by this moment in a way that is tonally appropriate and a joy to read.
While the story doesn’t exactly sprint forward, there is enough new information about Valentine, solid jokes, and the promise of a Harrow/Lady Deathstrike team-up to make for a satisfying issue.
