Lots of big movies coming in April

Clear your calendars.

April has no shortage of big movies with fans of horror, video games, and sports all seeing releases that will interest them. The month also sees big name actors like Matt Damon, Russell Crowe, and Seth Rogen. Whether you are in the mood for another Dracula story or want to see the most famous plumbing brothers in the world get the big screen treatment they deserve, April has you covered.

Air (Theaters; April 5)

It is impossible to talk about the greatest basketball players of all time without a long discussion about Michael Jordan. His on the court exploits thrilled the world as he served as an inspiration for an entire generation of future ball players. This is not that story, however. Directed by Ben Affleck (who also looks amazing in the film), Air is about a shoe salesman at Nike who tries to sign a rookie Jordan.

Beau is Afraid (Limited; April 21)

With a cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Ryan, and Nathan Lane, plus Ari Aster at the helm, Beau is Afraid is one of the most anticipated movies of the month. (It does not hurt that it is being released by A24, which is like catnip for some.) The movie follows the titular character as he encounters supernatural threats on his journey home after the death of his mother.

Evil Dead Rise (Theaters; April 21)

Evil Dead is the rare horror franchise that has not gotten progressively worse with each installment. From video games to television shows, the series has continued to impress fans. Though details have been kept to a minimum, what has been shown has been creepy and looks to be another welcome addition. Evil Dead Rise is about two sisters who reunite only to have to confront flesh possessing demons.

Renfield (Theaters; April 14)

A double dose of Nick sees Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult star in a horror comedy that sees one of literature’s most twisted relationships brought into the modern world. When Dracula’s long time lackey Renfield falls in love, he decides it is finally time to move on with his life without his master.

The Pope’s Exorcist (Theaters; April 14)

Inspired by true events, the film is based on the memoirs of Father Gabriele Amorth. The Chief Exorcist of the Vatican, Amorth claims to have performed tens of thousands of exorcisms. This film follows the exorcist as he investigates the possession of a young boy and uncovers a centuries old conspiracy.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (Theaters; April 5)

The bar for video game movies is pretty low, with the bar for a Super Mario Bros film being as low as it gets. This computer-animated release looks like it will wipe away the stink from the 1993 live-action release. The trailers capture the silliness and imagination that have brought joy to fans for decades. The voice cast includes top names such as Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Charlie Day. It seems like Nintendo has a movie they can be proud of.
