‘Fury’ #1 reveals Watcher secrets and new Marvel threats

‘Fury’ #1 sets up stories and advances Nick Fury Jr. for the future.

Spoilers ahead for Fury #1. You’ve been warned.

Al Ewing’s Fury is a celebration of Nick Fury in all his forms, thanks to his 60th anniversary this year. He’s teamed up with Scot Eaton, Cam Smith, Tom Reilly, Adam Kubert, and Ramon Rosanas to tell tales during World War II, the 60s, and more, all involving Nick Fury Jr. Possibly the most game-changing reveals, however, is what Watcher can do on the moon, and who the next Man on the Wall will be.

Unfamiliar with the Man on the Wall? The long and the short of it is Nick Fury Senior took up the mantle as a protector on the moon from threats outside of Earth. This was revealed in the Marvel event Original Sin back in 2014. We were reminded of this role in Dan Slott’s run on Fantastic Four, especially with the heavy use of Watchers. Not since then have we heard a peep from Nick Fury, who plays a major role in Fury #1.

In the final scenes, after the dust has settled, Nick Fury Senior takes Nick Fury Jr. for a stroll on the moon. Along the way we learn three major things.

#1: There are 12 hidden doors similar to the one Da Vinci called the Door of Tomorrow

This is a huge reveal for future story potential. Since each door has a special ability–the Door of Tomorrow gives you a year of knowledge and takes you a year into the future–we can expect other amazing abilities via these doors.

#2: The Watcher has a Door of All Worlds allowing him to see the tales of What If..?

This reveal sticks out, as it directly connects a location to the ability to see the multiverse. Could this play into future stories?

#3: Nick Fury Jr. is now the Man on the Wall

It’s a bit vague, but Nick Fury Senior explains he wants to go on vacation. He’s certainly not giving up on being a hero but needs some rest and relaxation. This means Nick Fury Jr. is a protector of Earth, but given that both Furys noted there are greater dangers on Earth itself, maybe this role will change.

Be it as it may, this is only a sliver of what you can expect in the Fury #1 one-shot. I recommend picking up the entire issue, especially if you want to learn more about the McGuffin he’s after throughout the book.
