After Yellowjackets wrapped up its nine-episode second season last weekend, one of our biggest questions involved the rumored bonus tenth installment. Fans (us included) were hopeful after co-creator Ashley Lyle strongly hinted back in March that one was coming.

The embers of hope burned even brighter after behind-the-scenes photos of Jason Ritter filming during season two appeared. At the time, the consensus among the hive was that Melanie Lynskey’s husband would be portraying the Hunter (aka Cabin Daddy) in an episode exploring his backstory.
jason ritter (melanie’s husband) was announced to be in this season a long time ago & here’s photos of him on set as cabin guy, plus ashley lyle tweeted about bonus eps so it’s basically just putting the pieces together lol & there was originally 10 episodes slated for the season pic.twitter.com/k818J3aRcF

Since then, Ritter’s non-appearance in season two (combined with lots of wild speculation) had folks fully convinced that the 10th episode of season two was happening this weekend. I wish I could lie and say I drank the Kool-Aid, but I was hitting refresh on /r/Yellowjackets and checking to see if Showtime updated its episode listings right along with my fellow episode 10-truthers.
While Friday came and went without a bonus episode, Lyle assured fans on Twitter that one would be coming at some point before season three.
Noooo. Go to bed! Get some rest! There will be a bonus episode between seasons, but I love you guys and I don’t want y’all to lose sleep thinking it’s tonight.

With the 2023 Writer’s Guild of America Strike still ongoing (and for very good/important reasons), there’s a decent chance that Showtime will delay the episode for a while. Depending on how long the strike lasts, they may need something to provide their streaming service a boost after the new scripted shows dry up.
Lyle appears to think the episode will air closer to season three rather than the recently completed season two.
Closer to S3. I’m not being coy, there’s a strike and things are complicated!

There’s also no guarantee that the bonus episode will be about the Hunter/Cabin Daddy, although that’s another bit of speculation I’m not ready to give up on, either.
Whatever the case, Hive can all agree that it’s good we’ll be getting more Yellowjackets during the long wait for season three.
