Nintendo’s next-gen console reportedly to launch in 2024

The Nintendo Switch’s successor may arrive by the end of next year.

Predications and rumors of Nintendo’s next console, commonly dubbed the “Switch 2,” have been rampant in recent years. The most recent and reputable report comes today from VGC. According to their sources, development kits are in the hands of “key partner studios” with Nintendo planning a 2024 launch for its next console.

VGC writes Nintendo is “likely to release new hardware during the second half of 2024” to ensure they have enough stock for launch. Nintendo’s next console would retain the portability of the Switch while launching with more storage capacity than the original Switch. Instead of an OLED screen, it would have an LCD display as a way of keeping production costs down.

Backwards compatibility is still an unknown at this point. Personally, I have a hard time imagining a “Switch 2” without some means of backwards compatibility, but we’ll have to wait and see. Making the “Switch 2” backwards compatible would go a long way towards Nintendo’s goal of carrying the Switch’s userbase into the next generation.

After The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launched in May, Nintendo’s future first-party lineup looked tepid at best, and a new console on the horizon might have been the reason why. New games were announced at last month’s Nintendo Direct, including Detective Pikachu Returns, a game starring Princess Peach, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Nintendo has yet to comment on the report, and mostly likely won’t have anything to say until they announce their next console themselves.
