‘Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant’ #4 is a gripping finale

‘Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant’ is gripping with powerful moments of Ms. Marvel finding her identity as a mutant and so much more.

Now an X-Man, Kamala Khan had no time to bask in the utopia of Krakoa as Orchis struck, and now she’s on the run. Sabir Pirzada and Iman Vellani (the MCU’s Ms. Marvel herself) wrap up their four-issue series today, with Ms. Marvel fighting a sentinel alone. I hope she can survive the experience, especially since we still don’t know what her new mutant power will be!

Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #4 is a well-written, exciting, action-packed finale. The writers don’t skimp on interesting captions that put us right inside Kamala’s head, relaying imminent danger in her fight or general thoughts on being a mutant now. By the end of the issue, it’s quite clear Ms. Marvel is okay with her identity shifting and empowered to continue being a hero for all people.

Thoughts on racism are also relayed, adding a grounded message about everyday life. In a key scene, Bruno attempts to jerry-rig a device to help Kamala, but the students at the university are furious he’s helping a mutant. In the tense scene, Bruno relates how utterly backward it is these students are so ignorant, and he shares his love and care for Ms. Marvel. The scene adds a bit of humanity to the fight comic while giving us that “world outside your window” Marvel goodness.

The action is pretty damn good too. Carlos Gómez and Adam Gorham bring highly detailed art with dynamic framing in every panel of this comic. Balanced with the captions, this book is perfectly paced. The sentinel looks incredible in great detail, with little bits of techno gadgetry to make it look imposing and believable. Ms. Marvel shows off a few different powers, all of which look spot on. Drawing stretchy powers is complex, and they pull it off nicely. There’s an incredible shot of the sentinel crashing into the ground that’s so detailed I had to give the page an extra minute to take it all in. Throw in a nice iconic nod to a classic Ms. Marvel pose, and there’s a lot to love here.

There’s also a good scene with Emma Frost that X-Men fans will appreciate. Ms. Marvel’s new identity as a mutant comes into focus, and the creators give us just enough to chew on concerning her yet-to-be-revealed mutant power. Sure, it’s a touch frustrating we don’t get an answer to this big question we’ve pondered since the Hellfire Gala, but at least they recognize it’s still going to happen. Also, Emma fans will adore how she’s written here.

Overall, getting a check-in on the mutant power and a few other details relayed via captions show the creative team has thought about plotholes, which are nonexistent. That’s saying something when comics tend to have a few due to page count limiting things or simply missing something.

Ms. Marvel fights a sentinel alone and does it with impressive visuals and a great sense of internal monologuing. I couldn’t be happier with Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant and I’m excited to see Iman Vellani continue to write this character. Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant is gripping with powerful moments of Ms. Marvel finding her identity as a mutant but so much more.
