As one excellent year for video games ends, another begins. 2024 promises indie darlings and Triple A hits week after week, and those games start launching now.
Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.
Palworld (1/19)
Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
Pocketpair’s survival craftin’, third-person shootin’, monster collectin’ adventure Palworld launches into early access this Friday for PC and Xbox consoles as well as Xbox Game Pass. The “Pokémon with guns” game features over 100 “pals” for you to capture, befriend, fight alongside, and even…eat? Yep, Palworld promises to be weird, and I am all for it. You can have your Pals build your a fortress or factory, and even poach them from sanctuaries. You can experience Palworld like you’re playing a Pokémon game as an even worse version of Team Rocket.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered (1/19)
Platform: PlayStation 5
In addition to the graphical upgrades you’d expect from a remaster, The Last of Us Part II Remastered also comes with new games modes and lost levels to explore. The roguelite survival mode No Return is most notable; you can play as several different characters from the cast of TLOU2 with various gameplay modifiers as you fight your way through waves of enemies and frightening bosses. You can enjoy the guitar mini-game in Guitar Free Play mode (as the game’s composer, Gustavo Santaolalla, no less!), and the lost levels allow you to wander, with developer commentary, through levels that were cut from the game’s full release.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown (1/18)
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
Prince of Persia goes metroidvania with The Lost Crown. The 2.5D action platformer has you on an adventure through the cursed city of Mount Qaf to rescue the titular prince. The platforming and action will make use of the series’ trademark time powers as playable character Sargon will use them to explore new areas and defeat enemies in combat. A very notable feature in The Lost Crown is the ability to pin screenshots to the map to help you remember what environmental obstacles you weren’t able to overcome without the right upgrade. Still not sold? You can check out a free demo of The Lost Crown or read a review or two as it currently holds an 86 metascore on Metacritic.
