New video games worth playing for the week of 2/12/24

Check out what’s new in the world of video games this week.

As one excellent year for video games ends, another begins. 2024 promises indie darlings and Triple A hits week after week, and those games start launching now.

Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden (2/13)

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S

Don’t Nod has developed in a variety of genres with their games, from the platforming Jusant to the visual novel Harmony: Fall of Reverie, but each title places a heavy focus on narratives and putting choices in the player’s hands. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden looks to be no different. The action RPG follows a pair of ghost hunters in 17th-century New England. After one becomes a ghost herself, the pair set out to find a way to reverse her ghostly condition while battling a bevy of supernatural enemies.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong (2/16)

Platform: Switch

For over four decades Mario and Donkey Kong have been duking it out, and that rivalry continues on the Nintendo Switch in Mario Vs. Donkey Kong, a remake of the 2004 Game Boy Advance release of the same name. It’s a puzzle platformer that tasks you, as Mario, to track down Donkey Kong and retrieve the Mini-Mario toys he’s stolen. It’ll feature over 130 levels (wowza!) that can be tackled with a co-op partner and also be played at a casual difficulty, which offers checkpoints and removes any time limits.

Skull and Bones(2/16)

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S

If you’ve somehow missed the 30 trailers, half-dozen delay announcements, and multiple exposes into its development, then let me be the first to let you know Ubisoft has had Skull and Bones, its open world pirate adventure game, in development for quite a while now and it’s finally launching — for realsies — this week. Originally envisioned as an expansion to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag — which is rumored to be remade soon — Skull and Bones launches as one of Ubisoft’s largest open worlds where players will sail the Indian Ocean to live out their pirate fantasies. You’ll fight for treasure against other players and wage warfare on the open waters.

Also worth checking out this week: Ultros, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, Helskate, and Titanic: A Space Between.
