‘Madame Web’ reviews are in, and they are not good

Sony’s latest Spider-Man-adjacent movie is going over about as well as you probably expected.

Madame Web opens in theaters tomorrow, February 14, but reviews from critics are trickling in early and spoiler alert: they aren’t very good. The movie has been mocked relentlessly ever since its first trailer gave the world the stiff line that became an instant meme in “He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died”. Unfortunately, the team behind Morbius didn’t seem to have hit a home run in this followup set in the Sony Spider-Man universe, as the movie is sitting at 23% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this writing. Let’s take a look at some reviews:

David Fear of Rolling Stone compares it to one of the most poorly received movies of the past decade:

It is the Cats: The Movie of superhero movies. Not a single decision seems of sound mind.

Barry Hertz of Globe and Mail suggests that perhaps we treated Morbius too harshly:

I owe Morbius an apology, because it turned out that Sony Pictures just needed a little more time and a whole lot of misplaced confidence to make an even worse Spidey spinoff, the astoundingly abysmal Madame Web.

Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson calls out the overt product placement:

Mostly, the movie is a Pepsi ad strangely populated by performances turned to low volume. Johnson, so likable in fare as varied as 50 Shades of Grey and Suspiria, is a minimalist performer. Her casting here is an unfortunate mistake.

It’s not all negative, however, as Christy Lemire of RogerEbert.com thought it was better than we’ve been led to believe:

“Madame Web” is not the unmitigated disaster that its clunky trailer or its calendar spot in February would suggest.

Madame Web hits theaters tomorrow, February 14, 2024. Will you be making the trip?
