Get an inside look at the upcoming Kickstarter graphic novel ‘Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise’ before it launches!

The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Prequel Graphic Novel, along with a bevy of extra goodies like a replica sword, is on the way. It’s all part of a Kickstarter launching soon, with a graphic novel set to expand on the universe. It’s the first official new Soul Reaver story in two decades, since 2003’s Legacy of Kain: Defiance.

To celebrate the momentous occasion, Bit Bot Media and Crystal Dynamics are creating exclusive collectibles, which will be available alongside the graphic novel, but what are we in for with the graphic novel?

I asked graphic novel co-writer Joshua Viola all about it, digging into the lore, what it takes to stay true to the story, and more!

Plus, scroll down to get an exclusive look at t-shirts available once the Kickstarter goes live!

AIPT: What’s the elevator pitch for Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise?

Joshua Viola: The Dead Shall Rise uncovers hidden chapters of Raziel and Kain’s journeys, connecting events between Blood Omen 1 & 2 and Soul Reaver 1 & 2. We explore Raziel’s origins, from his beginnings as a human child to his transformation into a Sarafan warrior and the mysterious emergence of his wings as a vampire. You’ll see familiar characters like Moebius and new ones whose ties to Raziel, Kain, and the Hylden add some fun, new twists.

AIPT: For a prequel to a game, how much research goes into getting every detail right? Do you have resources to draw from?

JV: The research has been extensive. I’m already fairly well-versed in the franchise, but the world is vast and the complex plot has required some pretty deep exploration. Crystal Dynamics has been actively involved at every stage. I’m in constant communication with key figures, juggling daily texts, emails and more Zoom calls than any project I’ve worked on before. We’ve also got an extensive reference bible that’s hundreds of pages long, as well as graphs and diagrams mapping out the various timelines. On top of that, Daniel Cabuco (one of the original team members) has offered guidance and suggestions.

AIPT: Can you talk a little bit about the art, anything blow you away?

JV: One of my favorite aspects of the series has always been the art. I still believe Raziel is one of the best-designed characters ever created, and it’s the art design that captivated me all those years ago. With The Dead Shall Rise, I wanted to ensure it has its own distinct look and feel, consistent with the world of Nosgoth but with a fresh twist.

That’s why I brought in Juan Samu for the pencils and inks—I love his work. Zac Atkinson’s colors and Jeremiah Lambert’s lettering elevate it even further. Juan’s sense of composition and fluidity enhances the storytelling. We’ve also got incredible cover artists like Dave Rapoza, Matthew Therrien, and Aaron Lovett, along with top-notch talent like Jonny Bush, Ninja Jo, Sandra Rush, and Preston Asevedo contributing to t-shirts and merch. And then there’s Daniel Cabuco, who created some concept art and maps for us. There’s a lot to unpack, but it’s all exceptional.

AIPT: Why do you think Soul Reaver is such a robust property to continue to develop?

JV: It’s the storytelling, character design, voice acting, and music—this series has it all. The games still hold up, and in today’s gaming world, a captivating single-player campaign with a deep story is increasingly rare. Nosgoth is a rich, immersive world that fans just don’t want to leave. The IP continues to have fans clamoring for more because there’s nothing else like it today. I’m so honored to have the chance to contribute to its legacy through the graphic novel format.

AIPT: What makes Kain such a great character, in your opinion?

JV: He’s a complex character. He’s committed some terrible acts, but his motivations are truly compelling. And he’s perfectly balanced against Raziel. They create a dynamic that’s intriguing as hell.

AIPT: If Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver – The Dead Shall Rise was a song, what would it be and why?

JV: Well, The Dead Shall Rise is a song—a whole album, actually. We’ve created a full companion soundtrack with new and familiar tracks by Celldweller, including a song featuring Matt Heafy of Trivium.
