New video games worth playing for the week of 9/2/24

Check out what’s new in the world of video games this week.

With Labor Day here, summer has unofficially wound down. But fear not, as the fall promises indie darlings and Triple A hits week after week. This year has a lot to live up to compared to 2023’s best video games, but it’s been strong so far with releases like Princess Peach: Showtime! and Little Kitty, Big City winning over gamers and cat lovers alike.

Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.

Astro Bot (9/6)

Platform: PlayStation 5

After starring in Astro’s Playroom, Astro returns in a new adventure. Astro Bot both harkens back to old-school 3D platformers and celebrates PlayStation’s history and mascots. There will be over 300 bots for Astro to rescue spread across 80 different levels, and an additional 150 “VIP” bots; characters like Ratchet, Aloy, and Kratos in bot form. Just like with Astro’s Playroom, the gameplay will take complete advantage of the DualSense’s adaptive triggers and haptive feedback.

The Casting of Frank Stone (9/3)

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S

Supermassive Games enters the world of Dead by Daylight with The Casting of Frank Stone. Just like the developer’s previous hits Until Dawn and The QuarryFrank Stone will feature a branching story informed by player decisions with QTE- and exploration-based gameplay. The game will certainly lean into the Dead by Daylight mythos as it follows a group of young friends investigating a sadistic killer and a cosmic mystery.

NBA 2K25 (9/6)

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S

Fresh off his championship run, Jayson Tatum graces the cover of NBA 2K25. WNBA champion and MVP A’ja Wilson joins him on the All-Star Edition cover while Toronto great Vince Carter takes over the Hall of Fame Edition cover. NBA 2K25 boasts over 9,000 new animations, a new dribble engine, new signature shots, and an updated defensive movement system. In franchise mode, players can explore the new Steph Era, starting with the 2016-17 season, in addition to past eras like the Magic vs. Bird, Jordan, and Kobe eras. In good news for PC players, the PC edition will be on par with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S editions and include the new features.

Also worth adding to your wishlist: El Paco, Elsewhere on PS5, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, Spectre Divide, and Prison Architect 2.
