Phoenix (Jean Grey) and Blade took center stage at SDCC’s Marvel Rivals panel. The creative minds behind season three of the hit game dove into the work that went into the Marvel icons’ intricate costumes and weapons.

Marvel Rivals gives Phoenix a refreshing new look
During the panel, it was revealed that Jean Grey’s character design was inspired by recent runs of comics and outer space. The Phoenix in Marvel Rivals is described as “a sophisticated woman in her thirties with short wavy red hair. She has delicate features with freckles and the signature emerald eyes.” Her outfit is a “sleek modern cape” made of “green and gold meteorite fabric.”
The designers looked at pictures of real-life meteorites and incorporated them into Jean’s costume. They wanted her physical appearance to match the fierce personality she has in the new game. The suit also had to be tailored to her in-game powers.

Blade returns to Marvel Rivals
Season three of Marvel Rivals reintroduced Blade to the franchise. This marks his return after defeating Dracula in season one and mysteriously disappearing from season 2. According to the creators, Blade is “timelessly good-looking” in the game. The designers accomplished this by “modernizing” the character’s “classic look”, without taking too much away from his original comic book appearance. Blade kept his iconic trench coat and received incredible new weapons.
