Dynamite brings back Jae Lee’s legendary ‘Hellshock’ for its 30th anniversary

Along with reprints, Dynamite has also acquired media rights to expand ‘Hellshock’ beyond comics. Details on new editions, adaptations, and upcoming projects will be announced soon.

Dynamite Entertainment has secured all rights to one of the most acclaimed independent comics of the 1990s: Jae Lee’s Hellshock. The publisher plans to reprint the series’ original storylines in 2026, timed to the title’s 30th anniversary, with Lee himself heavily involved.

First debuting in 1994 as one of Image Comics’ earliest non-founder titles, Hellshock quickly stood out for Lee’s signature gothic artwork and complex storytelling. The series followed Daniel, a Nephilim caught in the eternal struggle between Heaven and Hell, exploring themes of faith, madness, and human fragility. A second volume arrived in 1997, just before Lee’s career skyrocketed again with Marvel’s Inhumans.

For Lee, the series remains his most personal work. “Hellshock remains the most important work of my career. It’s where I grew up. It’s where I reached further than what I could grasp. It’s also where I learned some tough lessons,” Lee reflected. “And my best friend, Nick Barrucci, was there for me every step of the way. From Hellshock’s inception until today. There is no better home for him than Dynamite. Hellshock was my ’90s baby. I’m incredibly excited to see what he’ll continue to grow into.”

Dynamite CEO and Publisher Nick Barrucci praised both the project and his long relationship with Lee: “Jae is one of my favorite creators and we’ve been close for a long time. He is not only one of the best-selling artists in the industry, but also receives incredible critical acclaim… But to many, his signature work has been Hellshock, a personal story that he wrote and drew nearly 30 years ago. We’re honored that Jae has entrusted us with the tapestry of Hellshock, and bringing it to new media from movies, television, games, and more.”

Along with reprints, Dynamite has also acquired media rights to expand Hellshock beyond comics. Details on new editions, adaptations, and upcoming projects will be announced soon.
