So, what’ll be left after total environmental collapse?
Likely just comics.
At least that’s sort of the premise behind Hostile Planet, a new environmental sci-fi anthology from Strangers Publishing. Currently crowdfunding via Kickstarter, the collection features 13 different tales from “a world after environmental disaster has ruined our modern civilization and a new reality has taken hold.” That includes stories about “post-capitalist hellscapes to guiding barren deserts to wind farming,” with each entry a poignant exploration of “human resilience.”
And given the global feel of Hostile Planet, the creators themselves span the world: Tyler Landry, Garresh, Margot Ferrick, Miranda Smart, Lando, Andrey Garin, Anastasiia Gadskova, Bryce Davidson, Izzy Liu, Solynx, Tim Fischer, Sacred Field, and Caterina Gerbasi.

Originally inspired by “Mad Max, the Armored Core franchise, and the works of Tsutomu Nihei,” Hostile Planet is a standout release from Strangers. It’s the publishing house’s 7th such Kickstarter project since they debuted back in 2020.
“Tom [Kneeshaw], my co-editor, and I have been planning and working on this project for two years now,” publisher Eddie Raymond told AIPT. “It feels like the perfect thesis statement for the vision of what I always intended Strangers to exemplify — a home for cartoonists from across the globe to create genre comics with uncompromising vision. Hostile Planet is so full of artists we both adore, it’s honestly an embarrassment of riches.”
According to Strangers, the rewards available are the “bare basics” to best keep “this campaign simple.” Those rewards are:
- A digital PDF copy of Hostile Planet.
- A physical soft cover copy of Hostile Planet.
- A physical copy of Hostile Planet with a 6×8 sketch from a contributor to the anthology.
- Multiple sets of retailer tiers. (Non-U.S. retailers, reach out to Strangers to stock Hostile Planet.)
The Hostile Planet Kickstarter runs through Wednesday, December 10, and has already raised greater than $3,000 of its $7,300 goal. (Stretch goals include a one-color riso print at the $20,000 mark.) To pledge your support, head here. Then, check out some interior art below.
