In 2006, Marvel Comics asked readers a question that defined a generation of superhero storytelling: Whose side are you on? The answer reshaped the Marvel Universe forever.
Two decades after Civil War, by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, split heroes, friendships, and fandoms alike, Marvel is returning to that era with CIVIL WAR: UNMASKED, a five-issue limited series launching in May. The anniversary project comes from writer Christos Gage, artist Edgar Salazar, and original Civil War colorist Morry Hollowell, bringing a fresh perspective to one of Marvel’s most consequential events.
Set before, during, and after the original Civil War, the series will spotlight untold stories centered on key figures from the conflict, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, Goliath, Tigra, and Captain America. Each issue promises new revelations that deepen the moral, political, and personal fallout of the Superhuman Registration Act.
The original Civil War remains one of Marvel’s best-selling collections of all time and served as the foundation for countless sequels, adaptations, and reinterpretations across comics, film, television, and games. Civil War: Unmasked aims to honor that legacy while uncovering secrets that add new texture to defining moments—Tony Stark and Steve Rogers’ ideological clash, Spider-Man’s shocking unmasking, and the decisions that still echo through Marvel storytelling today. Marvel also teases that some of these revelations will directly impact the present-day Marvel Universe.
The series kicks off with a mission from Bishop that sends Tony Stark into the Days of Future Past timeline, forcing him to confront the long-term consequences of the Superhuman Registration Act in ways he never anticipated.
Reflecting on his personal connection to the event, Gage said:
“In 2006, I was a rookie comic book writer when a short delay in the production of the epic Civil War event limited series led to me being offered the one-shot Iron Man/Captain America: Casualties of War. It was my first really high profile project at Marvel, a big hit, and 20 years later, they still haven’t managed to get rid of me! So it’s a thrill and an honor to revisit that troubled time with CIVIL WAR: UNMASKED, in which I have the privilege of joining with brilliant artist Edgar Salazar and trend-setting original Civil War colorist Morry Hollowell to reveal never-before-told stories from that milestone event!”
Marvel has also revealed the main cover by Geoff Shaw, alongside a variant cover by original Civil War artist Steve McNiven, offering longtime fans a visual bridge between past and present.
CIVIL WAR: UNMASKED is available to preorder now at local comic shops.
