This NYC comics anthology brings together 50+ creators to capture the city at its rawest

‘Real Life Comix, Only in New York’ delivers a wide-ranging, deeply personal look at the city through 51 stories that feel chaotic, honest, and unmistakably real.

Launching now on Kickstarter, Real Life Comix, Only in New York is a 216-page hardcover anthology that brings together 51 short stories exploring life in the city through a wide range of voices and styles. Co-edited by Dean Haspiel and Doug Latino, the collection leans into memoir, observation, and lived experience to capture the grit, humor, and unpredictability of New York.

Creators contributing to the Kickstarter come from all types of content, including comics, literature, and beyond. Contributors include Roz Chast, Ben Katchor, Julia Wertz, Ann Nocenti, and Ron Wimberly, alongside a long list of emerging and underground creators. The result is a mix of tones and perspectives that reflect the city itself, sometimes funny, sometimes surreal, often deeply personal.

The book embraces variety, much like New York City. Stories range from slice-of-life moments to more abstract takes, each offering a different lens on what it means to live in or pass through New York. That range is part of the appeal, especially for readers who enjoy anthologies that feel lived-in rather than overly curated.

AIPT Comics has an exclusive preview of the project, offering an early look at the kinds of stories and artistic styles readers can expect when the book hits shelves.

Beyond the stories themselves, the book is anchored by a striking cover from Maria and Peter Hoey, along with a preface by Columbia University’s Karen Green and a foreword by Drew Friedman, who also contributes two illustrated pieces.

The project is over halfway to being fully funded, and Real Life Comix, Only in New York looks to be both a snapshot and a time capsule, capturing the city in all its contradictions. If the preview is any indication, it’s a project that’s as eclectic as New York itself!
