Marvel Comics has unveiled a new line of Isekai Variant Covers, featuring the current class of Stormbreakers artists transporting heroes and villains from across the Marvel Universe into fantastical alternate worlds.
Arriving throughout August, the covers draw inspiration from the popular Japanese isekai genre, in which characters are transported to entirely different worlds and forced to adapt to unfamiliar rules, powers, and environments. The result is a series of imaginative reinterpretations that place Marvel icons in settings ranging from fantasy adventures to magical realms.
The covers also arrive ahead of Marvel’s upcoming Marvel Mangaverse 25th Anniversary one-shots, a series of special releases celebrating the publisher’s manga-inspired universe while introducing fresh takes on classic Marvel characters.
The current Stormbreakers class includes Alessandro Cappuccio (Ultimate Wolverine), Netho Diaz (X-Men), Simone Di Meo (X-Men of Apocalypse), Juan Frigeri (Ultimates), Gurihiru (Jeff the Land Shark), Jonas Scharf (Ultimate Endgame), Geoff Shaw (Wade Wilson: Deadpool), and Luciano Vecchio (Uncanny X-Men). The last theme was What If…? announced in March.
Originally launched in 2020 as the successor to Marvel’s Young Guns program, Stormbreakers highlights emerging artists whose work demonstrates exceptional creativity and storytelling ability. Over the past 15 years, the initiative has featured creators who went on to become some of the industry’s most celebrated artists, including Steve McNiven, Jim Cheung, Sara Pichelli, and Ryan Stegman.
