NYCC 2019: Capcom Announces the Street Fighter 5 Intel World Open

At the World of Capcom panel, the prolific game creators announced the Street Intel World Open Tokyo 2020: Street Fighter V, a global tournament meant to determine the strongest country in the world. To provide further details on the tournament Street Fighter Executive Producer, Yoshinori Ono took to the panel. He was joined by Director of Business Development, Esports and Gaming, Mark Subotnick.

Let’s begin with what’s on everyone’s minds, “What do you get if you win?” The tournament will have a prize pool of $250,000. The event period will run throughout February – July 2020, culminating in the finals taking place in July at Zepp DiverCity Tokyo.

However, this isn’t meant for lone wolves. The tournaments battle format will be 3-on-3 team battles. We can hear you now, “But AiPT!, how do I qualify?” The Intel World Open Tokyo 2020 will have three pools of qualifying players. Twelve selected countries will be eligible for the National  Qualifiers. The fans on hand roared with approval, as Yoshinori gleefully announced that the United States is one of the twelve National Qualifiers. The qualifiers for the U.S. will be held from March 21, 2020, to May 16, 2020.

The second pool will be chosen among eight regions worldwide, and finally, the host country of Japan will host an online qualifier. Once 20 teams have been selected, they will face each other in Katowice, Poland, in June; here, the teams will be narrowed down to the seven that will join Japan in the finals. These teams will represent the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Unfortunately, Yoshinori could was mum on further details, but did clarify that more information will be provided in the November and December. Nov and Dec.

Yoshinori Ono did leave fans with a message, “play Street Fighter V, and if you don’t have it, get it and play.”
