Rocket League is going free-to-play this summer

Psyonix is also moving their smash-hit from Steam to the Epic Games store.

Good news arrived today for platform and PC gamers today when developer Psyonix announced that later this summer their smash-hit car-based soccer game Rocket League will be going free-to-play across all platforms. The exact date when the game will transition to free-to-play was not provided, but we know it’s coming sometime relatively soon.

Psyonix is making another major change by moving Rocket League from Steam to the Epic Games Store. Psyonix was acquired by Epic Games in May 2019, so the move isn’t exactly what you’d call unexpected. Players that are launching the game via Steam will still be able to do so after the transition occurs, but downloading new copies of Rocket League from Steam will be permanently disabled.

The Epic Games store continually features free games, some of the past high profile free games they’ve offered includes AAA titles Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2.

When the move occurs it will coincide with a number of other updates, including a major revamp to Tournaments and Challenges, as well as cross-platform progression. Players need not worry about their inventory, Psyonix assures everyone that no one will lose any of their hard-earned loot, Rocket Pass progress, or your Competitive Rank.

Anyone whose played Rocket League online before the arrival of free-to-play will be awarded with Legacy status, and earn the following:

  • All Rocket League-branded DLC released before free-to-play
  • “Est. 20XX” title that displays the year when the player first started playing Rocket League
  • 200+ Common items upgraded to “Legacy” quality
  • Golden Cosmos Boost
  • Dieci-Oro Wheels
  • Huntress Player Banner

The forthcoming update is Rocket League’s “biggest one yet,” and Psyonix tells players to expect more news on the transition and major changes “in the coming weeks.”

Rocket League is available to play on PC, macOS, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
