Watch: ‘The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw’ trailer

Starting off October with a story of witchcraft.

The month of October is off to an appropriate start. One of the most anticipated movies to make its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival was The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw. The movie was met with rave reviews  and is will be coming to select theaters to start off the scariest month of the year. It will also be available on VOD.

The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw is about the titular character and her mother, Agatha. The film is something of a modern day witch story (it takes place in 1973) with a mix of religious paranoia and folklore. Audrey and her mother live in a town that is starts to suffer from mysterious misfortunes. Crops, animals, and children are soon affected. No one in town seems to be immune from whatever is happening – except the Earnshaws.

“I wanted to tell a story about legacy, and to specifically explore it within the context of a folk horror narrative,” says writer/director Thomas Robert Lee. “The community grows increasingly desperate as their given circumstances grow dire. In reality, the pandemic appears to have amplified hatred and xenophobia, or at least the voices of those spewing hate speech. Obviously there is a world of difference between my screenplay and the very real ramifications of the pandemic, but the similarities, however surface-level they may be, have certainly been on my mind these past months.”
