‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake’ PS5 unveiled at Playstation Showcase 2021

The beloved RPG classic is officially getting the remake treatment.

After years of clamoring from Star Wars fans new and old, Lucasfilm Games finally announced the official Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake at today’s Playstation Showcase. Catch up on other video game reveals for Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, and God of War: Ragnarok.

Check out the trailer for the game below.

Developed by Aspyr — who has handled the remastering of Star Wars classics like Episode One Racer, Republic Commando, and Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast — the forthcoming remake will be a complete rebuild of the original game from the ground up. According to the game’s press release, the remake will be available as a Playstation console exclusive but will be available for PC as well. No details about other consoles have been announced.

Though they may not be a household name, Aspyr might be the best studio to tackle such an ambitious remake thanks to their history reinvigorating Star Wars games of the past. “As lifelong Star Wars fans with extensive experience working with many of its best games, we have the deepest love and admiration for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and cannot wait to share this amazing remake with the rest of the galaxy,” said Aspyr Co-Founder Ted Staloch.

Aspyr is working closely with Lucasfilm Games to ensure they capture the spirit of the beloved 2003 RPG classic and they’ve assembled a brand new development team of industry veterans who are passionate about Star Wars and have their own experience developing Star Wars titles.

“Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic stands out among the Legends of Star Wars storytelling, and we’re thrilled to be joining with Aspyr and Sony to remake this Legend for a new generation of players,” said Douglas Reilly, VP, Lucasfilm Games. “Our teams have been working closely and share a deep commitment to honoring what fans love about the original while bringing new fans on this incredible journey.”

While no details about a release window or potential gameplay updates were made available, Aspyr Lead Producer Ryan Treadwell made it clear during the Playstation Showcase that they were passionate about retaining the incredible storytelling of the original game — which is what made the game so beloved in the first place. It is not clear yet, however, if this remake will be admitted into the new Disney canon or if it will remain relegated to Legends. Given that the game takes place 4,000 years before the Skywalker Saga, one can assume the game could be easily introduced into official canon with little to no alterations.

At the tail end of the Playstation showcase, Treadwell promised more updates were on the way soon, so keep an eye out for more on this highly anticipated remake.
