When the Nintendo Switch first came out in 2017, I could not wait to get one. I was looking forward to the new Zelda release, Mario games are a dependable bunch, and there were going to be a bunch of third party games I could play in a new way. Plus, the idea of a handheld video game console intrigued me. It may not be as powerful as my PS4, but it was going to be unlike anything I had ever experienced.
However, I did not get the Switch when it first came out. I planned to buy it when Fire Emblem: Three Houses released, but never got around to it then either. Off and on over the past few years I have told myself I am going to get one. I just never came across that one specific game or reason to I needed to force me take the plunge. Nothing ever really pushed me to say I had to have one right now.
Until this week, that is. I recently got a Nintendo Switch OLED, and was even able to luck into getting a white one. While I have no intention of getting a Nintendo staple like Animal Crossing: New Horizons and I still have not bought Breath of the Wild yet (though I did get Mario + Rabbids and Three Houses), there was one game that absolutely necessitated I get a Nintendo Switch.
Ever since Nintendo first announced it years ago, there was never a doubt in my mind that I was going to get Shin Megami Tensei V. And while there may come a day when it’s ported to the PS4, I cannot wait for that day. I need to buy it now and because it is a Switch exclusive, I really had no option. I finally had to get a Switch.
Persona 5 and Persona 5: Royal are amazing games and in truth, I prefer the Persona series to SMT. I know what MegaTen fans are thinking. “Not another article complaining about how SMT V is not like P5:R.” That is not the case with me. As a matter of fact, if SMT V were like P5:R, I would be incredibly disappointed. If I am really in the mood for building social links with a Switch game, I can play Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
The SMT series has always offered a hardcore role playing experience. The turn-based action is top notch and the challenge is unlike similar games. The games have never been about putting together the strongest party to beat the game, but finding the best party for each battle. There is a strategy element that goes beyond just grinding. The games have always been more about its world changing circumstances than its slice of life storytelling.
It was an easy decision for me. I would have settled for a regular Nintendo Switch, but once I heard it was nearly impossible to have an OLED, I needed to have it. Thanks to a random encounter, I was able to get one. I may eventually get around to playing Breath of the Wild, but for the time being, I am all about Shin Megami Tensei V.
