WonderCon ’22: ‘Woke’ provides a twist on real life

The cast and EPs of Woke talk season 2.

As mentioned in this week’s Channel Surfing TV picks, Woke is set to return for its second season. Ahead of the premiere on Friday, the show held a panel during WonderCon. In attendance were stars Lamorne Morris, Blake Anderson, and T. Murph along with co-creators/executive producers Keith Knight and Marshall Todd and showrunner Anthony King.

After screening the first episode of season two, they all shared some tidbits on what to expect in the upcoming season. Now that we’re already familiar with the protagonist, Keef, the series will develop the other characters and the city of San Francisco as a whole. The storylines will incorporate other issues such as homelessness and the power of social media.

However, expect less of the talking objects this time around since in season one, they represented the voices within Keef’s head. Now that he’s becoming more active and vocal, he’s expressing himself more and will have less need for this type of inner monolog.

As seen in the trailer, there are new additions to Woke including Isiah Whitlock Jr. He will play Clovis’ dad and the cast were surprised by his comedic skills considering his drama pedigree in such projects as The Wire. Speaking of Clovis, viewers might have noticed a transformation compared to season one. That’s because T. Murph made an effort to get in shape during the pandemic just in case it got so bad he needed to battle zombies to survive. This new fit version of the actor is carried into his character as Clovis doesn’t shy away from any opportunity to show his abs.

Knight, who serves as the inspiration behind Keef, assured fans that the series will still be based on reality but with a twist. One example he gave is that this season, Keef gives himself an award for black excellence but the writers found they had to keep finding new names for the honor since the ones they came up with actually existed in real life.

Overall, it was a fun discussion and luckily, we don’t have to wait too long for new episodes.

All eight episodes of Woke season two drop Friday, April 8, on Hulu.
