What to watch during the first month of ’61 Days of Halloween’ on Shudder

It’s almost that time of year.

Shudder’s annual 61 Days of Halloween has officially started. Each year, the horror streaming channel releases films and shows that are perfect for the scariest month of the year. Here are some series and movies that will get you ready for October.

Lifechanger (September 6)

Drew has an identity problem. Every few days, he has to shape-shift, or face a painful death. He has to find someone and make a copy. He takes everything: their looks, memories, hopes and dreams. Their entire life. He becomes them, and they die horribly. Lately, the changes are becoming more frequent. Facing his imminent death, Drew sets out on one final blood-soaked mission.

Perfect Blue (September 6)

Satoshi Kan’s (Paranoia Agent) masterpiece comes to streaming for the first time. One of the most influential films of all time, its legacy goes beyond anime and has touched live action films and even music. Possibly the scariest anime of all time, the story follows rising pop star Mima who has quit singing to pursue a career as an actress and model.  As her stalker closes in, in person and online, the threat he poses is more real than even Mima knows.

101 Scariest Horror Movie Moments of All Time (Premieres September 7, new episodes weekly)

Who does not like a good list. The title says it all, as this eight part docuseries counts down the most iconic horror movies moments. Sure to anger some, the show is best used as a list of what to watch and revisit.

Flux Gourmet (September 15)

Set at an institute devoted to culinary and alimentary performance, a collective finds themselves embroiled in power struggles, artistic vendettas, and gastrointestinal disorders.  Starring Asa Butterfield (Sex Education, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), and Richard Bremmer (Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.) Written and directed by Peter Strickland (In Fabric).

On a vacation in Tuscany, a Danish family instantly becomes friends with a Dutch family. Months later the Danish couple receive an unexpected invitation to visit the Dutch in their wooden house and decide to go for the weekend. However, it doesn’t take long before the joy of reunion is replaced with misunderstandings. Things gradually get out of hand, as the Dutch turn out to be something very else than what they have pretended to be. One of the most powerful endings of any movie release this year.

A babysitter is stuck watching over a young brat on Halloween night who keeps playing vicious pranks on her. To add to her trouble the boy’s deranged father has escaped from an asylum and is planning on making a visit.

Queer for Fear: A History of Queer Horror (Premieres September 30, new episodes weekly)

A four-part documentary series is about the history of the LGBTQ+ community in the horror and thriller genres. The show will cover queer authors Mary Shelley and Oscar Wilde, vampire films, and alien invasion films. The show promises to be less about the bloody narratives and more about tales of survival.

61 Days of Halloween takes place on Shudder from September 1 though October 31
