With Labor Day in the rearview, the summer of gaming is just about over. While we wait for fall’s most promising releases, like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and God of War Ragnarök, let’s check out what’s releasing this week.
Splatoon 3 (9/9)
The shooter series that swaps bullets for ink returns to the Nintendo Switch with Splatoon 3. It’ll promise the same fast-paced and colorful gameplay of its predecessors across a variety of modes, including online matches and the single-player campaign titled “Return of the Mammalians.” Be careful of spoilers, however, as a lucky few customers have gotten their hands on the game early and therefore can already post gameplay videos and story leaks.
NBA 2K23 (9/9)
Even though the NBA season is six weeks away, basketball is back this week with NBA 2K23. It’ll bring what players expect — MyCAREER, a franchise mode, MyTEAM — while bringing back an old favorite that will surely get fans hyped for the new game. The Jordan Challenge returns for the first time since its introduction in 2K11 and brings with it five new challenges, including the 1982 NCAA Championship game Jordan won while at UNC and the 1988 All-Star Game.
Steelrising (9/8)
Steelrising, from developer Spiders, reimagines the French Revolution by tossing automatons into the fray. Aegis, the queen’s automaton bodyguard, must take down King Louis XVI and ensure the Revolution succeeds. Gameplay promises to be swift, brutal, and fun as Steelrising looks to stake a claim for itself in the soulslike genre.
