This week, HBO…er, HBO Max…or is it just Max now? Whatever. Anyway, we finally got the first trailer for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, which acts as a prequel to the 1984 Gremlins movie. The animated series revolves around a young Sam Wing (the dude who sold Gizmo to Billy’s dad) and his adventures in 1920s Shanghai after he finds the adorable little critter.
As expected, mischief and deadly shenanigans begin to happen as other Mogwais are found and begin turning into Gremlins.
You know those insufferable people who like to make sure you know they consider Die Hard a Christmas movie? Well, that’s me with Gremlins. Unfortunately, this trailer didn’t do a whole lot to get me excited about the series. If anything, it looks like a rehash of the 1984 story with updated characters (despite being set in the past).
That being said, I will watch every episode if the show endeavors to finally answer the question of when you can feed Mogwais again after midnight. I know the conventional wisdom is at sunrise, but it’s long past time for a definitive statement on the matter — especially if different time zones end up being part of the equation.
The first two episodes of Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai debut May 23 on MAX.
