Adult Swim reveals ‘Get Jiro’ and ‘Super Mutant Magic Academy’ adaptations and more

Adult Swim news on new and returning shows from the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

The Annecy Festival is a good event for studios to announce their upcoming animated projects.  Recently, Disney Branded Television revealed their future slate of series and specials. Now, Adult Swim showcased some of their new and returning programming.

Adult Swim has a number of new animated shows in the pipeline at Annecy Festival. The world premiere of Common Side Effects took place at the event. It is co-created by Joe Bennett and Steve Hely with executive producers Mike Judge and Greg Daniels. The story follows two former high school lab partners named Marshall and Frances. Marshall discovers a mushroom that can cure any ailment but encounters roadblocks in the form of the DEA, big pharma, and international businessmen while the pair try to brig the product to market. Common Side Effects is a half hour serialized comedic thriller produced by Bandera and Green Street Pictures.

Adult Swim is also known for their 15 minute animated series, and they have two future shows fitting that time length. Oh My God Yes! A Series of Extremely Relatable Circumstances is a comedy from Adele “Supreme” Williams. It takes place in the future where three best friends in 2102 South Central LA manage the crazy dating scene. Ha Ha You Clowns is a family comedy about three brothers who bond with each other and their father over misadventures after their mom passes away.

Also announced are a pair of shows with comic ties. The DC/Vertigo graphic novel Get Jiro is written by Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose with art from Langdon Foss and Alé Garza. It will receive a half hour series where, in the not so distant future, master chefs rule Los Angeles and customers will do anything to dine at the best restaurants. The titular Jiro is a mysterious sushi master who enters a dangerous culinary war to seek revenge against those who wronged him. Get Jiro is created by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka and is produced by Warner Bros. Animation.

Jillian Tamaki’s graphic novel, Super Mutant Magic Academy also will be adapted. The show is co-created by Tamaki alongside J.G. Quintel. The setting is a high school where the students are a mix of mutants and regular kids. It follows newest transfer student, Marsha, as she and her peers navigate romance, friendships and growing mutant powers.

Then, good news for fans of either Smiling Friends or My Adventures with Superman. Expect more from both series since they were renewed for a third season.
