Prime Video is moving forward with an eight-episode series inspired by Sex Criminals, the celebrated graphic novel by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The adaptation is being co-created by Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon (The Big Sick), and Tze Chun (Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai), with Nanjiani also set to appear on screen.
Often pitched as Bonnie & Clyde filtered through the awkward charm of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Sex Criminals centers on Suzie and Jon, two people who discover that time literally freezes whenever they have sex. What starts as a strange shared secret turns into a relationship, a lot of sex, and eventually a crime spree, that is until they realize they aren’t the only ones with this ability.
When it debuted, Sex Criminals became an instant phenomenon, repeatedly selling out and returning to print, earning international translations, and generating both controversy and acclaim. The series was named TIME Magazine’s “Comic of the Year,” won multiple Eisner and Harvey Awards for Best New Series, and regularly topped “Best of” lists across mainstream outlets like TIME and Entertainment Weekly. Fraction even appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to promote the book. Years later, Sex Criminals remains one of the most frequently reordered and widely talked-about comics of its era.
