Joe Kelly reflects on Spider-Man’s legacy, Sal Buscema’s influence, and returning to drawing (Part VII)

For this writer, past, present, and future coalesce to continually redefine Spider-Man.

As Amazing Spider-Man #1000 draws closer, we bring our seven-part conversation with Joe Kelly to a thoughtful and personal close. After unpacking Spider-Man’s past and present, this final chapter turns to the future.

Spider-Man’s history has always been shaped by the creators who leave their mark on Peter Parker while carrying forward decades of storytelling tradition. Over the course of this seven-part interview series, Kelly has explored how he approaches that responsibility, from redefining Peter’s emotional foundation to expanding Spider-Man’s mythology with new villains, cosmic stakes, and crossover events like Death Spiral. As his run builds toward Amazing Spider-Man #1000, questions of legacy, influence, and creative stewardship have remained constant behind-the-scenes.

But it’s also about the writer, and the conversation closes with Kelly looking back on his creative journey, the mentors who supported him early in his career, and how those experiences continue to influence his approach to storytelling today.

Kelly spoke emotionally about the influence of legendary Spider-Man artist Sal Buscema, who recently passed away. Buscema’s work shaped Kelly’s own earliest reading experiences.

“I think back to these comics, these dog-eared books that I was given as a kid,” Kelly said. “And he drew a lot of them.”

Kelly later met Buscema during his early career, an experience that reinforced his appreciation for Spider-Man’s creative lineage. Said Kelly, “I got to meet him…as a person.” Kelly described the encounter as formative.

“I’m meeting like a proper legend and hanging out with him,” Kelly said. Buscema’s kindness left a lasting impression, with Kelly adding, “He was a very, very sweet man.”

Mentorship and kindness are defining traits of the comics industry, as Kelly reflected, recalling other influential creators who supported him early in his career.

“Klaus Jansen…could not have been a nicer human being to me,” Kelly said.

Those experiences helped shape Kelly’s belief that comics are built as much on mentorship and collaboration as they are on important storytelling.

That same spirit of creative support eventually influenced a recent detour that allowed Kelly to reconnect with ambitions he once set aside. While contributing to the MAD About DC #1 (due out April 1), Kelly was given the opportunity to revisit his artistic roots by illustrating his own one-page gag.

In a surprise turn in the conversation, Kelly shared that he originally planned to pursue art professionally before shifting toward writing. With that in mind, Kelly requested permission to draw his contribution all on his own. It ended up making the project represented a personal milestone.

“After, you know, 30 years in comics…I drew a page,” Kelly said with a smile. “How exciting.”

As you’d expect, the MAD project rekindled his passion for visual art, with Kelly adding, “I by no means would consider myself an artist. But I can fire it up.”

The experience also gave him newfound empathy for artists working under tight deadlines.

“What the hell was I thinking after this ‘crowd scene’ or whatever,” Kelly said with a laugh.

Kelly’s reflections on Buscema and his own creative path reinforce a throughline that has cut across every part of this series: Spider-Man endures because each generation of creators builds upon what came before while bringing their own emotional perspective to Parker’s story.

From discussing Parker’s childhood trauma and evolving mythology to shaping major crossover events and milestone storytelling, Kelly has repeatedly returned to the idea that Spider-Man works best when grounded in human vulnerability. He also acknowledged that reaching Amazing Spider-Man #1000 represents a creative milestone that may shift how he approaches the title moving forward.

As Kelly explained, once the series reaches that landmark issue, “I’ll probably feel more open to do what I want,” describing the milestone as both a culmination of long-term storytelling and a moment that could create new creative freedom. That outlook positions the milestone not simply as a conclusion, but as an opportunity for new creative exploration.

As Amazing Spider-Man approaches that historic issue, Kelly’s work stands as both continuation and contribution, adding new emotional depth to one of comics’ most enduring heroes while helping define what comes next for everyone’s favorite web-slinger.
