Cruise control: Meet The Effectors, Royal Caribbean’s original superhero universe

Royal Caribbean’s original superhero franchise borrows plenty of comic book DNA, but can an original team of heroes win over fans without Marvel or DC behind them?

DC and Marvel – make room (!) – apparently there’s a new band of superheroes, and they’re found on the high seas. Meet THE EFFECTORS. Conceived by The Royal Caribbean (RC) cruise line, these characters were created specifically for their heroic appeal and over-the-top personas, all achieved through a Broadway-show stylization.

I do have to admit that – at first – this whole ‘cruise concept’ was baffling to my friends. With raised eyebrows, they’ve said things like, “Wait… YOU’RE going on a cruise?” Apparently, there’s still a lingering stigma against ships not being cool because it’s supposedly for the elderly and/or those seeking gluttony as punishment (all-you-can-eat and drink mandates can be a deadly combo). Also, those tell-all Netflix documentaries don’t exactly paint a rosy picture about being ‘trapped with strangers’ on a boat

Thankfully, it wasn’t nearly as dire here. It was actually kind of fun, as long as you managed your expectations and kept an open mind. From an optics standpoint, I suppose I could see how a cruise could be considered tacky or cheesy…but honestly, sometimes, you have to throw caution to the wind. Besides, as someone who has intensively planned solo trips throughout Africa, Asia, and Europe, for once, it was nice to be on ‘cruise control’ and let Royal Caribbean be my mental task rabbit to take care of what stops I would be making, what I’d be dining on, where I’d be sleeping, and what entertainment I’d be enjoying.

Additionally, Comic Con International (CCI) did understand the value of tapping this (consumer) market. While reception was lukewarm for bookings – and it’s currently on hiatus – artists/writers I spoke to who were asked to be guests on board said it was fun but not properly mapped out (there simply wasn’t enough to do). Perhaps CCI will revisit such a proposition in the future, as it could be a lucrative endeavor. After all, just look at all the hype and hysteria regarding Disney ships with their Marvel and Star Wars sea days.

So it’s safe to say that RC entering the comic book space (but cautiously so) and with a superhero show all of their own making, is a smart and effective way to ‘test the waters’ so to speak – and yes, pun intended. They had already experimented with other IPs like Back to the Future, Mamma Mia!, and Cats (spearheaded by creative director Racky Plews, who has also worked on Disney+ programs) – with much success, so this was just the next logical step for them.

While the Entertainment team wouldn’t disclose why they chose to create their own comic/superhero show instead of outright buying an existing DC/Marvel IP, my spidey sense tells me that it boiled down to legal and creative control. There are a LOT of executives/higher-ups you have to answer to if you want to put a (e.g.) Star Wars show on the water. You not only have to answer to Disney and Marvel, but also Lucasfilm. My educated guess is that they were like “no, thanks. Let’s do our own thing because we know how these work now…”

For this show, the superhero squad includes four primaries, each representing a different creative power, and Christi Coachman, Vice President of Entertainment for The Royal Caribbean, describes each one:

  • Viz: The leader with coordination and strategy abilities. “He’s always the first into the gith”.
  • Pixel: Controls light, video, and visual displays. She is described as “a beautiful social butterfly and confident”.
  • Reverb: Manipulates sound and music. Described as “unpredictable and mischievous”.
  • Lume: Dynamic hero with mastery over lasers and color. A “ sassy and dynamic supergirl”.

Coachman says that she wants guests to join them on an epic adventure: “The Effectors take to the stage to demonstrate their awesome powers, and then come together to battle their arch-nemesis, Crash, as he tries to take over the world with his army of airborne Drone Soldiers and scary Henchmen.”

Again, it’s super cheesy, but it somehow works – I was also shocked at how much production value was poured into a cruise show (of all things). However, this really did feel like something I’d find on Broadway Street in NYC.

Tonally, The Effectors is a lighter rendition of The Avengers. And IYKYK, the entire Royal Caribbean Entertainment (RCE) creative team also included Easter Eggs such as a character referred to as a ‘Level Zero Effector,’ which is in homage to Absolute Superman (AS) from DC Comics. (In the AS multiverse, the storyline has its ‘Level 0 Laborer’ within the Brainiac Collective society, where he was the lowest class of worker, AKA Brainiac 419,732. In this alternate-reality version, he’s an unhinged, deeply tragic clone of the original Brainiac who went insane after centuries of isolation.

While it would be easy to draw crowds with a Spider-Man or Superman Royal Caribbean comic/cruise show, there are endless financial and creative opportunities for The Effectors because the IP belongs solely to this cruise line. Certainly, the creative team have cited that they’re all superhero lovers, have grown up with these tales and fantastical elements with emotional beats, high-stakes action and moral dilemmas that can resonate with any viewer – but ultimately, it’s about world-building on the company’s terms (we’ve heard this line time and again… think about those who write/draw for the Big Two: Marvel/ DC versus taking their big ideas to an indie publisher where they have more creative control. I liken that situation to this. This is a business after all, so it lends itself well to them expanding this universe without needing to answer to anyone but themselves.

In fact, build they did because they have a sweeping saga with continuing ‘episodes’ (much like you’d find with Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman):

  • The Effectors: Origin Story, on board the Icon of the Seas
  • The Effectors I: on board the Odyssey and Spectrum of the Seas
  • The Effectors II: Crash ‘N Burn, on board the Wonder of the Seas
    • In this continuation of the first story, the original characters of The Effectors take on two new villains – Crash and his sidekick Burn.
  • The Effectors: Homecoming Parade, on board the Utopia of the Seas
    • While the other three productions are held in a classic setting (the Royal Theater), this is a high-energy, street-style production on the Royal Promenade (the ship’s strolling boardwalk) featuring music and interactive choreography.

Lastly, in a world of CGI and AI, it was admirable to see what technical features they could pull off on a ship: “All Royal Caribbean productions utilize cutting-edge technology and are led and managed by incredibly talented crew members. The Effectors productions feature digital video effects, drone and laser technology, aerial acrobatics and immersive LED lighting alongside our incredibly talented singers and dancers who are driving the character arcs,” Coachman explains.

Ultimately, if you hate the idea of cruising, it’s not worth booking a trip just for this.

Whether The Effectors ever expands beyond the stage remains to be seen, but it’s an unusual example of a company creating an original superhero universe outside traditional comics, television, or film.
