Avengers: Infinity War: Has the Soul Stone been hiding in plain sight the whole time?

Have we been missing the clues this whole time?

One of the most prominent mysteries going into Avengers: Infinity War has been the location of the Soul Stone. Out of the six Infinity Stones, only the Soul Stone has yet to make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, in looking at the marketing of the film, something hit me, and I have to ask: Has the Soul Stone been right in front of us this whole time?

In my breakdown of the second Avengers: Infinity War trailer, I theorized that Captain America was either in possession of or being protected by the Soul Stone. I also criticized the common fan theory that it is in Wakanda (namely because it means three out of the six Infinity Stones were accessible from Earth, which seems lazy to me).

But then I stumbled upon… something.

Avengers: Infinity War: Has the Soul Stone been hiding in plain sight the whole time?

Above is an image of the promotional standee for the film. In addition to all the heroes, you can see a prism of the colors of the Infinity Stones: blue behind Cap for the Space Stone, red behind Iron Man for the Reality Stone, yellow behind Scarlet Witch for the Mind Stone, purple behind Thor for the Power Stone, and green behind Black Panther for the Time Stone. Missing is the orange for the Soul Stone.

Except, the orange isn’t missing. It’s right there in the center of the poster, within the Avengers “A.” So I went and checked the other posters. The US, Chinese, and Japanese posters all show the logo with the same orange color. As do the trailers.

Avengers: Infinity War: Has the Soul Stone been hiding in plain sight the whole time?I mused about this with a friend on Twitter and we both came to a theory: What if the Avengers – their bonds, friendships, and love – is what summons the Soul Stone? What if the Anthony and Joe Russo have been hiding the Soul Stone right in front of us, their hashtag “#whereisthesoulstone” a playful taunt?

We’ll still have to wait for Avengers: Infinity War later this month to find out (yes, it’s less than one month away!). But hey, there’s a million Soul Stone theories out there (really, you think it’s Howard Stark?). I’m okay with adding this one to the pile.
