Overwatch’s new competitive season begins today

There’s only a two-hour break between season 13 and 14.

Season 13 of Overwatch’s competitive mode ended today. The typical week or so wait until the next season has apparently ended as well, with players will only having to wait two hours after the end of season 13 for the 14th season of competitive mode to begin. The downtime between seasons has been diminishing with each new season of competitive play, with this being the shortest break yet. There’s no official word from Blizzard on the reasoning behind the change, and as it’s doubtful many players are complaining about the change, thus I don’t anticipate an explanation anytime soon.

Season 13 officially ends today, Monday, December 31 at 2:00 p.m. PST (Monday, December 31 at 22:00 UTC). Season 14 is scheduled to begin two hours following the end of Season 13, today, December 31 at 4:00 p.m. PST (Tuesday, January 1 at 00:00 UTC).

As with past seasons of competitive mode, players who completed all of their placement matches for Season 13 will be eligible to receive a special spray and player icon. Once season 14 has begun these items will be unlocked automatically the next time players log into their Overwatch accounts. Players skilled enough to have placed within the Top 500 players will receive an extra player icon and animated spray on top of the other seasonal rewards.

As the Overwatch Twitter account was so kind to remind us, players will also receive Competitive Points based on their maximum skill rating achieved during the season.

Here’s the conversion table for Skill Rating (SR) to Competitive Point (CP).

  • SR 1-1499 (Bronze): 65 CP
  • SR 1500-1999 (Silver): 125 CP
  • SR 2000-2499 (Gold): 250 CP
  • SR 2500-2999 (Platinum): 500 CP
  • SR 3000-3499 (Diamond): 750 CP
  • SR 3500-3999 (Master): 1200 CP
  • SR 4000-5000 (Grandmaster): 1750 CP

Competitive points enable players to purchase the coveted golden weapons. Golden weapons cost 3,000 competitive points to unlock per hero.
