The Punisher’s season 2 foe is an alt-right Christian fundamentalist

‘The Punisher’ season 2 drops some time in January.

While season 2 of one of the few Marvel/Netflix shows that hasn’t yet been cancelled is set to debut sometime next month, we still don’t know a whole lot about the season’s plot. Now, thanks to a Collider report, we have some information on the vigilante’s next target: an alt-right Christian fundamentalist named John Pilgrim.

Pilgrim, according to the character’s actor Josh Stewart, is “a man who is a Christian fundamentalist who had a rage, a violent side of him. It’s buried deep. I think where this is all headed, that sort of side of him is going to resurface a bit.”

The horrific actions of Pilgrim will draw the ire of Castle, who will also don the iconic skull vest once again. Said Jon Bernthal, who plays Frank Castle, “This year, when he puts it on, we figured out a very intelligent, very tactical reason, a very psychologically tactical reason to wear it. It makes a lot of sense.”

With racially and religiously-charged hate crimes and violent extremism on the rise in the United States, a psychotic Christian fundamentalist is a poignant character for the show to tackle.

According to the report, season 2 will also feature the return of Billy “Jigsaw” Russo, season 1’s antagonist, in some form, and will start with Frank Castle outside of New York City, “getting a look at the country he fought for but has never really seen.”

We’ll see how it plays out on Netflix, some time in January 2019.
