Captain Marvel was a hit with critics (including here at AiPT!), and judging by its opening weekend box office numbers, fans were clamoring for the film as well.
The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie raked in $153 million in North America, according to the Los Angeles Times. Marvel earned $89.3 million in China, making it the third highest grossing MCU weekend in the country behind only Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War. Add in the rest of the worldwide revenue and you have a $455 million opening weekend, for a movie that cost upwards of $175 million to make.
The movie stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, as she takes part in an intergalactic war that leads her to her home planet of Earth, which awakens lost memories. The character will play a role in next month’s Avengers: Endgame. Captain Marvel is the first female-led movie in the MCU, and bested fellow female-led comic book movie Wonder Woman, which made $103.2 million in its entire first opening month.
Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff was very pleased with the movie’s performance over opening weekend. “We couldn’t be more excited for the results,” she said. “The global box office has been a wonderful thing to wake up to this morning.”
