Insomniac Games acquired by Sony

Sorry Xbox and Nintendo players- Spider-Man isn’t going multi-platform anytime soon.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has acquired Insomniac Games, the critically acclaimed studio behind numerous Playstation-exclusive properties like Ratchet & Clank and the record-setting Marvel’s Spider-Man

Insomniac Games is the 14th studio to join the Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios umbrella and will move-forward making games exclusively for Playstation platforms, dashing any hopes Xbox and Nintendo fans had for a Marvel’s Spider-Man port. Day to day operations of the studio will remain under the control of Insomniac’s current leadership team in conjunction with Sony’s San Mateo Studio.

“Insomniac Games is one of the most highly-acclaimed development studios in the industry and their legacy of best-in-class storytelling and gameplay is unparalleled,” said Shawn Layden, Chairman of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, in a press release.  “We have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family.  The addition of Insomniac Games to SIE WWS reiterates our commitment to developing world-class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man is just the most recent example of Insomniac’s success with PlayStation platforms

While Insomniac Games has worked on multi-platform titles like Sunset Overdrive and dabbled in Oculus titles like The Unspoken, the studio is best known for it’s best-selling and critically acclaimed Playstation exclusives. Given their success working together over the last 20 years, this union between Sony and Insomniac should not come as too much of a surprise.

This is great news for Playstation fans and will hopefully lead to more resources for future Insomniac titles like the much-anticipated sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man… or maybe a revival of the Resistance franchise? A guy can dream, right?
