Simon Spurrier talks teasing ‘Way of X’ and its place as a core X-Men book

Simon Spurrier comments on the recent ‘Way of X’ teasers and what to expect from the series.

Comics writer Simon Spurrier has been teasing the much anticipated new X-Men book Way of X all week. After reporting on the teasers, I reached out to Spurrier for comment. Creators have teased their books before, but this time it felt different. Way of X #1 out April 21st so there’s plenty of time to tease the heck out of this book, which is drawn by Bob Quinn and colored by Javier Tartaglia.

“These ads are really just me being a bit gonzo with it, with some ideas and assists from the wider X team. You spend a few years doing indie comics and you get into the headspace of Fanfare as well as Create. Quality and passion aren’t always enough in today’s market. Every little extra helps,” Spurrier said.

Nipping a specific detail in the bud, Spurrier told me this book isn’t about religion. “With WoX I realized there was a contingent out there who had the book mentally positioned as A Story About Religion — which is a long, long way from what it’s really about,” and if you think this is a side book you can skip, think again. “I don’t want anyone to feel like this is a book that can be easily skipped-over. It’s not. It’s core.”

Spurrier went on to say these teasers aren’t simply to drum up interest in the book but to give hints at what Way of X will be about. More specifically, “The problems and ugly cultural practices bubbling-up on Krakoa, the big questions that need answering, and why Nightcrawler’s one of the right people for the job.”

While the ads have been fun, and certainly people have been responding judging by the likes and replies, Spurrier said they can’t capture everything a reader will get out of the series. “What ads can’t show is the crackle, the fun, the thrill. I guess I’m just itching to share those with everyone, and these little onesheets are a way of venting some energy.”

With that, a new teaser was revealed today by Spurrier which you can see below. The character depicted has some crazy stuff going on with his scalp–no that’s not hair–as he utters, “Science.” Paired with the teaser is some text which reads, “So, nowadays you’re–?” “Growing consciousness-altering Krakoan psychedelics out of my own cerebellum – yes. It seemed the obvious step.”

Psychedelics? Far out!
