On Tuesday, Matt Grobar at Deadline.com reported that Jake Gyllenhaal will produce and star in a film adaptation of Image Comics’ Oblivion Song.
The series by Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici centers around a portion of Philadelphia being sucked into another dimension along with 300,000 of its residents. Despite the government giving up on recovering them, Nathan Cole (who would presumably be played by Gyllenhaal) makes frequent trips into the hostile/dangerous world in an attempt to rescue whoever he can — including his brother.
A film adaptation of Oblivion Song was actually announced back in 2019, but there hasn’t been any major news since then until yesterday’s announcement.
The series isn’t as good as Kirkman’s The Walking Dead or Invincible (at least in my opinion), but still highly enjoyable. Considering the spectacle it would take to bring the story to life on screen, however, Oblivion Song could end up being one heck of a great film — especially with an Oscar-nominated talent like Gyllenhaal behind it.
