Sony’s PlayStation subscription service might be formally announced next week

Sony’s long-awaited Game Pass competitor looks to be on its way soon.

Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier and Takashi Mochizuki reported today that a PlayStation subscription service from Sony may be revealed as early as next week according to their sources “familiar with the plans.” It’ll have various pricing tiers that give players numerous games to play, from new PlayStation 4 and 5 games to classic games from the original PlayStation days through the PS3 era for the top tier. No word yet on what those different pricing tiers will cost, however.

We first got wind of Sony’s subscription service, codenamed ‘Spartacus,’ back in December. It’ll offer a service to rival Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass where 25 million subscribers can access new Triple A titles as well as older games for a monthly fee of $9.99 on console or PC ($14.99 for both). Some simple math tells me paying for a year’s worth of Game Pass is equivalent to purchasing two $59.99 games, and 2022 is already stacked with them only three months in. Sometimes games arrive on Game Pass after they’ve been out for some time, while others, like indie darling Tunic, are available right away.

According to the Bloomberg report, the PlayStation subscription service will “will debut with a splashy lineup of hit games from recent years,” but it “is not expected to feature its biggest titles on the day they come out.” The authors cite God of War Ragnarök as an example of a huge game that will not be a day-one release on the subscription service according to their sources.

Regardless of its opening-day lineup, Sony’s PlayStation subscription service will certainly be welcome by fans envious of Microsoft’s price-conscious and robust service. Stayed tuned to AIPT as we learn more about Sony’s subscription service
