Kickstarter Alert: Savage Crucible action figures

…and it definitely deserves to be a part of your toy budget.

On Friday, a brand new action figure line made its official debut on Kickstarter. Savage Crucible features three initial waves of highly detailed, 1/12th scale (i.e., 6-7.5 inch scale) fantasy-themed characters/creatures.

The line was developed by Harvinger Studios, the brainchild of the person behind myactionfigurecustoms.com, Willian Robert Post. Post has collaborated with several artists and toymakers to create Savage Crucible, including Jason Bienvenu of Spero Toys.

Let’s look at some goodies being offered before diving into why this is a toy line you definitely don’t want to sleep on.

We should first point out that Savage Crucible isn’t just a great-looking toy line. Post and his team are creating an entire mythos around the characters, which thus far includes a graphic novel, detailed maps, and an introduction video so metal that it’ll shake your old tape deck to its ancient core.

If you don’t know what a tape deck is, congratulations on not having lower back issues yet. You can also still enjoy the heck out of this trailer.

There are currently three Savage Crucible waves in various levels of production. Let’s look at the first one, which has an estimated shipping window of October/November 2023.

Please note that for figures with concept/prototype galleries, the Kickstarter renders show the final paint schemes. Also, the figures are designed to be popped and swapped with each other, which should provide all sorts of customizing options.

NOTE: The final version of the figure will have the grey body with purple armor. I prefer the green armor, but both options look pretty awesome.

The last couple of lizards look a bit naked compared to their heavily armored wave mates, don’t they? Well, that’s because Wave 1 also includes these fantastic options to dress them up. They are both available as add-ons with any pledge.

“Dwarven Coins? Where did those come from?”

Dwarves are one of many cool things that Savage Crucible is planning for the future, a few of which you can see below.

“Those figures all look great, but they’re kind of expensive.”

I hear ya — especially as someone who constantly knocks Hasbro constantly about their absurd retail price points.

So why am I still pledging for figures from a line that isn’t part of an existing IP (with its nostalgia claws dug into my soul)?

I’m not a beer drinker, but I still understand the difference between mass-produced beers and hand-crafted/microbrewed ales. The latter is made in small batches with higher-quality ingredients and a great deal more care, thus leading to a higher price. It also (presumably) tastes much better. That said, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying (and even being loyal to) the familiar big-name brands that are much more affordable.

Unfortunately, Hasbro has begun charging microbrew prices for the plastic equivalent of a Bud Light.

A couple of months ago, the company revealed that their “deluxe” Ronan the Accuser figure would carry a whopping MSRP of $38.99.

Kickstarter Alert: Savage Crucible action figures

For $0.99 LESS than this giant hunk of green plastic (with one accessory), you can get one of these bad boys that’s loaded with accessories and sporting significantly better paint/sculpting.

To come at this from the other end, you could pay $34.99 for the new Gamerverse Spider-Man (which is made from mostly reused parts and lame/sparse accessories), or you could buy one of these for just a few dollars more:

I may be a lifelong Spidey fan, but I’ve already got plenty of his plastic representation on my shelves. What I don’t have is a beautifully detailed, heavily armored, and weapon-toting badass lizard.

Even if you get down to the baseline $24.99 price for many of the other Hasbro figures (which is virtually guaranteed to rise in the near future) you’re getting a great deal less craftsmanship and unequivocally fewer accessories for your money. Add in Savage Crucible’s ability to swap parts with each other, and their figures are a significantly better value.

“How do I know if I can trust that these figures will get made?”

Back in 2020, a company called Omega Studios launched a Kickstarter for what appeared to be a great-looking line of werewolf figures. They even offered the figures for preorders on BigBadToystore, giving the campaign an air of legitimacy.

Before pledging for my own werewolf, I decided to see what I could find out about the company and/or the creators behind the line…which turned out concerningly little. I then attempted to email the creators to ask about interviewing them for a possible feature on AIPT. After getting no response, I decided it wasn’t worth the risk.

Years later, the creators have taken all the unfortunate campaign backers’ money and gone radio silent.

On the completely other end of the spectrum, Savage Crucible has been showing people its concept and design process since early 2022. Their Instagram page has been wide open for anyone to watch WIP pictures and videos like this one:

The Savage Crucible Facebook page is private, but only for making sure unfinished work (shown even more there) isn’t available for anyone to see. They also let me in, so that should tell you how low the membership standards are. In all seriousness, I’ve never met William Robert Post, but he responded within an hour to my request to use images from the private Facebook page for this article.

In my time lurking on the Savage Crucible social media pages, Post proved no qualms about engaging potential fans on everything from design choices to pricing. His name and the names of his massive design/production team (many of which toy collectors will easily recognize) have also been available on the Savage Crucible website for months.

So yeah…deception is definitely not a goal of this campaign.

“Where does the campaign stand now?”

As of this writing, the campaign had demolished its $120,000 goal in less than 48 hours. Wave 1 and Wave 2 are currently unlocked, with Wave 3 (the one I’m most excited about) halfway to being available. With 48 days remaining, it’s a safe bet we’ll get there.

If you want to get in on the ground floor of what looks like a truly fantastic toy line (or you just want to make sure I can get some armored fish/squid minions for my Lovecraft display), then click here to make your pledge today.
