The biggest new video games releasing the week of 2/20/23

Check out what’s new in the world of video games this week.

2023 has gotten off to an excellent start for video games, with hits like the Dead Space remake and Wild Hearts releasing alongside indie gems like Season: A Letter to the Future. This week looks to continue that trend with a new VR headset on the way from Sony.

Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.

Like a Dragon: Ishin! (2/21)

Previously released only in Japan in 2014, Like a Dragon: Ishin! comes out worldwide this week almost nine years to the day of the original game’s release. A spinoff of the Yakuza series, Ishin! will take players to 1860s Kyo during the Bakumatsu Era as Japan was starting to modernize. The remaster will retain the original’s action-adventure gameplay while updating its visuals. You can download a combat demo to get a taste of the game before deciding to purchase.

Octopath Traveler II (2/24)

Octopath Traveler II comes five years after the original, but it features an all-new cast and setting, making it an easy entry point for people wanting to discover their next favorite JRPG. It features eight characters to use in its turn-based gameplay, each with their own intertwining stories. The art style is wonderful with 2D pixel characters being set in a 3D diorama or sorts. If you’re interested, a demo is also available on Switch, PlayStation, and PC and it’ll even save your progress over to the full game.

PlayStation VR2 (2/22)

This is the first time we’ve featured hardware in this column with Sony’s PlayStation VR2 releasing this week. It boasts 4K resolution, eye-tracking infrared cameras, haptic feedback, and Tempest 3D audio. The Sense controllers will feature the same haptic feedback and adaptive triggers the DualSense is known for as well as finger touch detection to approximate the location of your fingers. The PlayStation VR2 will launch with an impressive roster of video games, headlined by VR2 exclusives like The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR and Horizon Call of the Mountain. Unfortunately the VR2 will not support backwards compatibility, so hang onto the original PlayStation VR if you have it to keep playing your games.
