‘Stargirl: The Lost Children’ #4 review

Who is The Buyer?

We’re getting closer to the end of Stargirl: The Lost Children, and the excitement is building. In issue #4, we learn who The Buyer is, and you will be shocked. I didn’t see it coming, at least but I’m glad it happened and I can’t wait to see how it plays out toward the conclusion of this series. Geoff Johns, Todd Nauck, and Matt Herms come together to bring us an excellent chapter in Stargirl’s adventure, and there are some exciting moments with new and old characters, wild drama and action, and a character’s return.

As you can see from the preview, the opening reads like a history lesson. It serves a dual purpose as a recap for newer readers and a way for Corky Baxter to explain what happened to the Lost Children. As someone following these events, I will say it was more of a way to tie it all together, which I don’t fully feel has happened, but thankfully Todd Nauck and Matt Herms make the retelling worthwhile with their fantastic art. If Geoff Johns plans to use the New Golden Age to link Flashpoint, Doomsday Clock, and Flashpoint Beyond together, some work still needs to be done.

Honestly, I don’t see how those events matter to the Lost Children since some were in the Time Masters’ Lab saved from Limbo and others trapped on the island. These extra Lost Children make for more than 13, but we still have two more issues to see how things will come together and questions, hopefully, answered. Something I did find interesting was the revisit to the Divine Continuum diagram – this time, instead of the Metaverse being on Prime Earth, as it was in Flashpoint Beyond #1, it is now on Earth-0. How important is that change?

DC Comics

I appreciate Stargirl’s dilemma with Wing’s future (or past?) when he returns to the timeline again, as the Lost Children will be put back into their respective times. If you know your Wing history, you know that’s a challenging situation. I like Stargirl’s symmetry as it mirrors what the original Seven Soldiers of Victory went through as they scattered about time. I think there is some strong potential here for Stargirl to embrace her Star Spangled Kid legacy some more. Stargirl isn’t the only one with drama as Judy Garrick, Boom, and Emiko Queen, Red Arrow, deal with the Childminder’s machines calling up memories and fighting past those feelings to escape.

Now to the action. This is where Todd Nauck and Matt Herms get to shine. As mentioned earlier with Judy and Emiko, those pages were packed with emotion and energy as you experience what these two heroes are going through. Todd captures the emotions with his facial expressions on the characters, and you feel so bad for Judy. Another excellent example of the art’s strength is when the Lost Children storm the Child Minder’s castle. Seeing all those characters together was inspiring – it’s great to see them rise here, and I can’t wait to see more of them in action with each other. And regarding the last part with The Buyer – wow! I am so glad to see Todd draw that character again, and what a cliffhanger to end on.

Stargirl: The Lost Children #4 is a great issue ignites the adventure these Lost Children are on. Lots of sacrifices, hurt, and hope await if they can escape. Yet the Child Minder brings The Buyer to the island, and what a surprise it is when you discover who it is. Questions arise, but adventure awaits!

Todd Nauck and Matt Herms provide excellent art that evokes childhood innocence and hope in the face of dire situations
Geoff Johns finds new ways to put his characters in rough situations
The reveal of The Buyer was awesome and I can't wait to see how they play into this series
There is quite a bit of patchwork needed to align Flashpoint, Doomsday Clock, and Flashpoint Beyond to the greater DCU
