One:12 Collective ‘Ghost Rider & Hell Cycle set’ review

Over two years since the preorder opened, the One:12 Collective ‘Ghost Rider & Hell Cycle set’ is finally here!

It has been a good week for patient Mezco Toys collectors, with the One:12 Collective Batman 1989 figure released and now the Ghost Rider & Hell Cycle set shipping. Both were preordered years ago, but the wait is over, and after inspecting the Ghost Rider & Hell Cycle sets, I can confidently say both are fantastic.

This action figure has a light-up head Ghost Rider and a Hell Cycle that lights up and makes two rad sound effects. Along with two chains, one on fire, that are woven with a metal wire for posing, the action figure comes with two flame effects that connect to the tires of the motorcycle, two flame FX for the figure to hold, multiple hands, and a standard Mezco display post and stand with a bag for the accessories. Retailing for $240, this figure isn’t cheap, but it’s also of a higher quality that collectors are looking for.

One:12 Collective 'Ghost Rider & Hell Cycle set' review

From top to bottom, this is a great action figure with tons of little details that puts it far and away ahead of the standard of say, Marvel Legends. It comes in a large box with a slipcase cover with different modern Ghost Rider art on both sides of the slipcase, and two pieces of art on the box itself.

Once inside, the action figure is packed much like all Mezco figures, with a protective plastic covering the body and face to protect everything. The packaging uses two pieces of plastic, so the extra six hands won’t go flying when you pop this open. It also comes with batteries for the Ghost Rider light-up head and the Hell Cycle. A nice bonus that is standard for premium action figures like this one.

Putting the batteries into the Hell Cycle and the light capsule the head fits onto is fairly easy. The Hell Cycle uses three LR44 coin cell batteries, while the head takes two super tiny coin cell batteries. The capsule for the head was tricky, but if you pry apart the plastic, it should give.

The Hell Cycle doesn’t just light up, though, as it also makes two different sound effects. One effect has the Hell Cycle revving up and driving along after some demonic screams, while the other has a few demonic groans with a rev-up of the engine. You can listen to both in the video below.

Cool light and sound effects are great, but this action figure truly shines in the details. There’s a lot to love with the costuming and head sculpt. For instance, there’s a texture to the skull, and the zipper on a boot–and scuff on the boot, for that matter–add an excellent level of realism. Customary of Mezco, the leather jacket has a realistic leather look and feel. The zipper on the jacket itself might not be size accurate–it’s as big as an eye socket–but it’s a real zipper that allows for some customizing.

You can spend a lot of time eyeballing the figure’s details and accessories. The super tiny scratch marks on the spear end of the chain are a nice touch, and the chain itself feels sturdy and well-made. You can see a brushed metal effect on the motorcycle’s front fender and nice details that make the plastic look like real metal. That includes the paint options and textures. Even the motorcycle seat looks like a cushion with plenty of detail to add great realism.

Fire accessories are also well done here. The trail flame, in particular, has a ton of detail and nuance, making it look like a real flame. The throwable flame accessories have good translucency and color changes to create a chaotic look of the flame.

The biggest drawback and a negative for some with this action figure will be the possibilities. Compared to standard One:12 Collection action figures, the head movement is subpar. Due to the head sitting on the light capsule post, the head can’t look up or down. The body has plenty of articulation, but the leather coat inhibits easy posing, like whipping the chain with the arm up and back. You can get there, but it takes some work to stretch the leather a bit or find the right angle.

The price will likely be too high for many, but given the level of detail with the textures, paint, and costuming, it’s worth the price. Compared to the price of the Haslab Ghost Rider at $349.99 with a flaming car that had far less detail and realism, I’d argue this is a steal. Compared again to the Marvel Legends Ghost Rider and Flame Cycle at $69.99, it’s steeper in price, but the detail isn’t even close. The quality of the materials and details are far greater with the Mezco Toys action figure.

I simply love the Ghost Rider & Hell Cycle set for the attention to detail and high quality of everything included. This isn’t a toy you buy a little kid, but collectors will adore the nuances and impeccably well-made action figure.
