The biggest new video games releasing the week of 5/8/23

Check out what’s new in the world of video games this week.

Spring is the air, and the outside world beckons with warm weather and sunshine. But that’s not going to stop gamers from staying in and checking out some new video games! While The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (finally releasing this week!) is what most gamers are looking forward to in May, the month is full of exciting new releases.

Let’s check out what video games are hitting storefronts this week.

Death or Treat (5/11)

Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

Halloween in… May? Why not! Death or Treat is an action-filled roguelite hack ‘n’ slash. You’ll play as Scary, owner of candle-manufacturer Ghost Mart, as he tries to save HallowTown by returning the Halloween spirit. You’ll meet various other shop owner in HallowTown from whom you can purchase upgrades and supplies to help you battle your way through hordes of enemies.

Darkest Dungeon II (5/8)

Platform: PC

Red hook Studios is back with a sequel to 2016’s Darkest Dungeon. It’s a roguelite turn-based RPG that builds upon the combat and foundation of the first game. A new feature in Darkest Dungeon II is stress management; you’ll have to keep your party calm and collected as they face the apocalypse lest they have a meltdown in combat and lose HP. While Darkest Dungeon II launches on PC today, expect a console release sometime in the future as console verisons are in development.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (5/12)

Platform: Nintendo Switch

It’s finally here! After six years of waiting, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom drops Friday, May 12 for the Switch. After a couple delays, Tears officially got a subtitle and release date last fall, but it wasn’t until very recently fans got a good look at its gameplay — ramping up the hype and anticipation. New abilities for Link include the fuse ability where he can meld objects together to create new weapons or tools and the recall ability where he can send object backwards in time, like redirecting a bomb back to an enemy. Be careful if you want to avoid spoilers — Tears of the Kingdom leaks have already popped up online. Don’t have a Switch yet? Well now’s the perfect time as you can pick up a beautiful Tears of the Kingdom themed OLED model.
