NYCC 2023: Avengers Assemble panel celebrates 60 years of Avengers

Honestly, keep waiting for the Next Big Thing panel.

Since The Avengers first hit the shelves in 1963, the team has come a long way. They have gone from relatively obscure heroes to movie stars known around the world. To honor the Avengers, the Avengers Assemble panel offered a few sneak peeks at some select Avengers’ futures, while also offering a fond farewell to editor Tom Brevoort, who is preparing to move to the X-Men division of the company.

Ryan Penagos led the panel, which featured Brevoort, Jed MacKay, Al Ewing, and Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski. As the panel is largely meant to serve as a special “This Week In Marvel” event, not too much of note was revealed. MacKay summarized the issues of Avengers that he has already been working on, while offering high praise to artist C.F. Villa. Two new covers were revealed, showing off an arc that MacKay has been referring to as “Twilight Dreaming”.

Ewing walked through Immortal Thor next and offered a few directions about the upcoming larger stories. He promises that issue #3 will “drop some hints” about the larger overall story. Cebulski acknowledged that Ewing has planned this book through issue 50, so it seems that there will be years of Immortal Thor ahead.

Ewing also hinted at the future of Immortal Thor. He provided a few images that could tease upcoming issues, and he emphasized that the third image was the most important. According to Ewing, deciphering the meaning of these images will be left to Reddit.

The conversation turned back to MacKay then, as he talked about Moon Knight. Finally giving up the charade that Moon Knight will actually die, MacKay defended his resurrection Vengeance of the Moon Knight, promising “I know we’re testing your patience… but stick with us, it’s gonna be worth it.” Vengeance will be focusing on one character for each issue, as MacKay recalls that #1 will focus on Reese, #2 on Tigra, and so on.

Doctor Strange was next, as MacKay walked through his tenure on that book. He had to take a moment to reflect on The Death of Doctor Strange, as the editors teased him about his propensity to kill characters.

Marvel also unveiled a new Marvel Unlimited series, Avengers UnitedThe series will start with a 25-issue arc that will be split into five chapters and released weekly. Marvel announced the new property during the panel and pushed it live at the same time. That earned some cheers.

While not too much of note was revealed in this panel, it’s likely because Marvel is saving the big news for the upcoming Next Big Thing panel, which will be taking place at 3:15pm ET on Saturday. Keep an eye out for any major news then. Cebulski and MacKay went back and forth about whether or not Clea and Strange were still married, at which point Cebulski teased the Spider-Man fans in the audience about Peter Parker and MJ. MacKay decided to make no comment.
