‘Titans’ #6 review

As Earth faces turning into a Beast World, the Titans are stepping up to the threat.

Before you read this issue, it’s strongly recommended that you read the first three issues of Titans: Beast World. How will the Titans handle being the first line of defense for Earth? While that drama plays out, we will also discover who Brother Righteous, a.k.a. Brother Blood, really is.

Artist Travis Moore, who is no stranger to the DC Universe, teams with colorist Tamra Bonvillain for this issue. In the opener, we are an audience to Starfire’s origin. How it plays out is excellent, as it will help explain how connected her alien heritage is to the Beast World event. It also gives her some incredible depth as a character. With Tom Taylor’s narration, he expands on the bond shared between Starfire and Nightwing, relates her to Superman, and lays the groundwork for why she will be so passionate in this event. It gives foreshadowing vibes that she will suffer in this event.

The story connects to the event nicely as we see Nightwing and Batgirl organizing heroes and working with Detective Chimp and Doctor Clancy. I like how Tom Taylor applies pressure to the Titans, as there is no League to come in and save the day. Plus, other heroes have been changed into animals, so the weight is on Nightwing’s shoulders. Yet, it doesn’t stop there as Brother Righteous and Tempus storm the Titans’ Tower. The splash page that reveals Tempus by Travis Moore makes the character look unstoppable as the framing makes him imposing.

Following up on the breach, Nightwing calls out to the Titans, and the next set of panels is an excellent reminder of how they function as more a family than a team. The vibe sets as the members check in and report what they can or can’t do, as if you were calling on your friends. It is understandable when they can’t, and the banter fits the characters nicely. The one who can come is Firestar, and we have a payoff from the opening as the connection to Brother Righteous reveals itself. Granted, in the last issue, we had hints that he was from Tamaran, but now we know his motives were deeper. Like I said earlier, Starfire is going to agonize quite a bit.

Starfire fans, take heed: this issue will expand on her origins and connections to the Beast World event. Brother Righteous was shown to be from Tamaran, but when you discover how connected he was to Starfire’s woes, you’ll understand her anger from that cover tease. Great sync with the DC event!

The issue stands as a great intersection between what has been happening in Titans and Beast World
The expansion to Starfire's origin is special as it grounds her to tragedy and builds bonds with characters like Nightwing and Superman
