One hobby I’ve kept up over the years, besides reading comics and writing about said comics, is card games. From staples like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic The Gathering to new games – including Disney’s Lorcana – there’s a lot of fun (and a quick learning curve) to be had. Emerald City Comic Con had a few new card games at hand, with demonstrations galore. On Thursday, I played a demo of the upcoming Star Wars Unlimited game, while Friday was dedicated to Pocket Paragons’ Massiveverse expansion.
Star Wars Unlimited features two players going head to head, with each player attempting to take their opponent’s base. Each base consists of a leader card, while other cards are used as “resources” to weaken your opponent’s defenses or bolster yours. The opening expansion, Spark of Rebellion, features characters from the original Star Wars trilogy.
The Star Wars Unlimited demo was set up in a nice, spacious room, with an eye-grabbing display. In addition to displays that featured life-sized cards from the game, there was a large cutout of Darth Vader with lightsaber ablaze. It also didn’t hurt that Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was playing on a HD setup, which convinced me to stay long after my demo (ironically during said demo, I would play as Luke Skywalker).
Pocket Paragons had a similar setup; players choose a character card then use other cards in their hand to defend and attack. The Massiveverse expansion, which was announced last year at San Diego Comic Con, features characters and abilities from the Image Comics popup; anyone who’s read my reviews for the site knows I’m a huge fan. The Pocket Paragons demo lets players walk away with a starter deck that consists of Radiant Black and Rogue Sun cards.
It turns out that Pocket Paragons shared a table with another game, A.E.G.I.S. The latter is a strategy game that features players trying to build their own giant robot – think Risk meets Voltron. Giant robots, cosmically powered superheroes, and a trip to a galaxy far, far away make for some surprisingly great card games.
Star Wars Unlimited: Spark of Rebellion goes on sale on March 8. The Massiveverse edition of Pocket Paragons is available to support via Kickstarter, while the A.E.G.I.S expansion is on sale.
