It was revealed at SDCC’s Hall H that Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom, and yes, that’s as shocking as it sounds. One of the greatest villains to ever grace Marvel Comics is played by the same guy who played, expertly, Tony Stark. What does this mean?
There are a few possibilities. The first that comes to mind is that RDJ will be a variant of Tony Stark in another multiverse, who became Dr. Doom. This would allow for the “true” Doctor Doom to emerge eventually in the 616 universe.
Another option is that he is Victor Von Doom, but he simply looks like Robert Downey Jr., although that’s a tougher pill to swallow.
A few truths we do know:
- Robert Downey Jr. will star in Avengers: Doomsday May 2026
- Avengers: Secret Wars will premiere in May 2027
- The Russo Brothers will direct both upcoming Avengers films
- Fantastic Four will appear in both films
- Marvel is clearly more aligned than ever, as it was announced that “One World Under Doom” will be the 2025 story arc to pay attention to in Marvel Comics
- “New mask, same task”
The last bullet is important, as it appears Robert Downey Jr. is confirming that Doctor Doom has the same goal as Tony Stark: to save everyone. Only he’s got a new look and is likely doing it in an entirely different way. Probably a lot more evil.
One thing is for certain: Robert Downey Jr. has huge boots to fill. This character is strikingly different, much more maniacal, and an egomaniac that rivals Tony Stark. Here’s to hoping he pulls it off and then some.
With Avengers: Doomsday coming very shortly in 2026, we’ll not have much time before Robert Downey Jr. is on the big screen, likely telling Reed Richards he’s wrong no matter what.
It’s a wild notion. What do you think of this casting? Let us know in the comments.
