The JSA is under the gun as an Amazo targets them in Absolute Power: Task Force VII! But what happens when the Amazo takes the power of a key Green Lantern figure? That’s explored in the third issue out this week!
Absolute Power: Task Force VII opens with an Amazo choking Alan Scott while the other JSA members are battered and beaten. It looks like it’s the end for him, but a funny thing happens. The Amazo absorbs Alan Scott’s power, but it also changes it. This clever idea is explored fully throughout the issue. Shut down as if in shock, the JSA flee to hide out.
Jeremy Adams has a great handle on the Amazo’s voice. Through digital command, computer thinking, Adams brings us into the mind of this robot. Its confusion and realization there are choices are quite intriguing, which leads to the cliffhanger that mixes things up quite well. When Amazos are running around easily taking out superheroes, it’s a nice change of pace to see the focus on an Amazo that might be questioning its orders.
The writing of the JSA is good, too. This book has a good mix of heroes, most of whom are scared or unsure of what to do next. Adams and artist Marco Santucci also throw in a big batch of magical characters at one point, making this book feel quite robust in how much it captures in the DC universe. On the reverse side, these heroes mostly sit or stand around. They’re written well but have little to do.
Santucci gets to make the main Amazo in this story stand out, from his cool armor look to the Green Lantern energy constructs.
If you’re looking for plot progression, there’s also a good B-plot progressing to a possible escape for the heroes already captured. From cover to cover, the character work and development of the Amazo cover a lot of ground.
I had a lot of fun reading Absolute Power: Task Force VII #3. Its secret weapon is an Amazo that accidentally gains a power nobody saw coming: the power of choice.
