‘Daredevil’ #15 review: Summoning the Devil

The Demons keep going after Matt Murdock, and this possession fights fire with fire in Daredevil’s world.

In Daredevil #15, writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Luigi Zagaria, joined by colorist Jesus Aburtov, continue to push Matt Murdock to his limits in this gripping saga. Following the deadly battles against friends and foes possessed by the Seven Deadly Sins, Hell’s Kitchen remains a battlefield for Daredevil’s relentless war. Yet, the chaos has spilled into Saint Nicholas’ Youth Home, forcing Murdock to grapple with his faith, his purpose, and his role as a protector. As he abandons his new calling to embrace more familiar paths, the question looms: can Daredevil rise to the challenge, or will he lose everything?

Starting with the art for this issue, Luigi Zagaria opens the comic with a macabre image: the poor inspector dead on the street, as two devils lament about losing this man. The conversation between Elektra and Murdock allows artist Zagaria to emote Ahmed’s script. Zagaria’s panels make the pages, and the scene moves along well as they take on different shapes and styles. There is something about Zagaria’s character faces that would catch my eye and make them feel more natural and the script deeper. I’m not sure, but something did feel a bit off with Elektra as she went on about Murdock. It’s just a weird moment to have the heroes face a dead body and then get a bit turned on and wanting, making me wonder if Elektra is more going on.

The following two scenes and conversations are fantastic. You can figure out the next Sin possession, which is a stirring choice and will be quite the confrontation, especially with summons at the end. For the most part, Ahmed has been picking some great characters to be possessed by the Sins as they attack Murdock. The moment between Father Javi and Murdock, in his Daredevil costume, was heartfelt. I like that they know they are saying more without saying it, but the scene plays coy enough that maybe they don’t know. Either way, it was great, and when Father Javi addressed the costume, it was satisfying.

While Daredevil doesn’t throw a punch in this issue, it’s a nice breather for Murdock to recenter and focus while setting up the next attack from the Sins. It is a good hype issue for the next, but I feel like the roller coaster is more shock than awe. I have enjoyed the trade paperback version of these issues as I feel like I get more with the overall progressions, but the monthly series thrill is still enough to make me miss the adventure sooner. Hopefully, future issues can be resolved while pushing the characters forward, as this is a fun hook that needs to advance faster.

Daredevil #15 is an enjoyable character piece that adds some great elements and sets up future issues. It would be great to get some resolution, but at least there are moving moments as Daredevil makes a confession. It’s a fascinating idea to have Matt Murdock take on the Seven Deadly Sins, who have possessed many from his world, but we’re on part 15 of this long arc, making it quite the trial of endurance.

Looking at who the next Sin has possessed makes me impatient for that next showdown
Just as the issue builds, it's time to settle in for that monthly wait
