S.H.I.E.L.D. returns in the next chapter of Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti’s ‘Captain America’

This January, the Road to Armageddon begins in ‘CAPTAIN AMERICA’ #6, the new arc of Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti that introduces the all-new S.H.I.E.L.D.!

At last week’s Lucca Comics & Games Festival, Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and writer Chip Zdarsky revealed major news for one of Marvel’s biggest ongoing titles: Captain America. Beginning in issue #6 this January, the next arc will deliver a seismic shift for Steve Rogers and the wider Marvel Universe — marking the long-awaited return of S.H.I.E.L.D.

For more on this series, don’t miss our recent interview with Zdarsky.

Drawn by Valerio Schiti with guest artists Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar, the new storyline moves the series into the present day and lays the groundwork for next summer’s massive Armageddon event, also penned by Zdarsky. Following the fallout from One World Under Doom, Cap finds himself caught in the chaos of a crumbling Latveria, torn apart by civil unrest after the fall of Doctor Doom and a brutal strike by Thunderbolt Ross.

As Cap steps in to protect civilians and investigate rumors of hidden weapons, Nick Fury Jr. and his newly reformed version of S.H.I.E.L.D. enter the scene — smaller, stealthier, and more morally gray than before. But their secret mission could put them at odds with Cap himself.

“Ever since S.H.I.E.L.D. disbanded nearly a decade ago, we’ve discussed bringing it back at almost every creative retreat,” said Cebulski. “After digging into this story with Chip and Valerio, we knew this was the right moment — especially in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s 60th anniversary year.”

The new S.H.I.E.L.D. lineup introduces fresh faces like Joe Ramos, Charles Castlemore, Trevor Tambling, and Red Widow, each with their own motives and loyalties. Fury’s challenge: keep them in line as they race to recover Doom’s dangerous weapons before anyone else does.

Zdarsky added, “S.H.I.E.L.D. represents human resilience and ingenuity. Bringing them back with a new purpose has been incredibly fun. They’re starting small, but Fury and his team have big plans.”
